Everything you can see is standing on something you can't.

Most of a good patio is buried. So is most of the reason a bad one heaves, sinks or holds water. M.S.S Landscaping does both halves of the job — the finished stone you sit on, and the excavation, grading and drainage underneath it.

What holds it up

Water, soil and slope. Get these wrong and the stone above them doesn't stand a chance.

Upper St. Clair · Job file

A back lawn that took days to drain.

Runoff was coming off the upper hillside and off nearby construction. After a big storm the back lawn would take days to drain and settle.

Just a few inches underground was the reason: a layer of shale rock. The water couldn't settle anywhere but on the surface.

We graded the area, added a few inches of topsoil, and sloped the new lawn away from the foundation to a drain — redirecting the water to an exit pipe out to the front lawn.

“Grandview / Black Walnut color combination with the Pillars and gas fire pit”

That's how M.S.S describes their own finished patio — by the manufacturer and the exact colour blend. R.I. Lampus Company pavers, Grandview and Black Walnut, run together with matching pillars and a gas fire pit.

Contractors who name their materials tend to be the ones who chose them on purpose.
